When patriotism is tailor-made for success

MAKING custom National Day-themed attire has led to a tailor in Terengganu raking in more than four times her usual monthly income.

Zam Zurina Abdul Kadir, 45, from Jertih said for the National Day and Malaysia Day celebrations on Aug 31 and Sept 16 respectively, she has been overwhelmed with orders from her customers around the Besut district.

She considers these orders her annual bonus, as sales and rentals of these outfits for both grown-ups and children exceed not only her normal orders, but also even during the Hari Raya season.

“So far, I have earned around RM2,000 within a week from early rentals of Merdeka-themed costumes.

“This could reach up to RM8,000 this month,” she said when met at her shop in Bandar Jertih, Harian Metro reported.

Zam Zurina, a mother of eight, offers a wide selection of clothing featuring the colours of the Malaysian flag. The outfits can be rented for RM30 to RM150 or bought for RM50 to RM250.

> Realising that her son was not academically inclined, a woman encouraged him to sign up for the Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia (SKM) instead of sitting for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM).

Sinar Harian reported that Zeeda Aziz had noticed her son, Danish, was struggling in school.

“When he was in Form 4, we enrolled him at the Kolej Lembaga Kemajuan Wilayah Kedah in Sik, Kedah, where he learnt to make women’s clothes.

“He later continued at GiatMara where he learnt to tailor men’s clothing,” she said.

Zeeda added that Danish now holds two SKM certificates and is currently working as a stylist at a luxury boutique in Selangor.

“His salary is adequate, enough for him to start living independently,” she said.

The mother of four hopes that her experience with Danish will be an example to other parents.

“Not all children are academically inclined.

“Perhaps their success and interests lie elsewhere,” she said.
