Johor MB to be Barisan's Mahkota by-election director

BATU PAHAT: Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi has been appointed as the Barisan Nasional director for the Mahkota by-election, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The Umno president said that the Johor Umno chairman would be assisted by party secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan.

“Kluang division chief Datuk Md Jais Sarday will be the operations director while Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, who is our war room chairman, will be the coordinator in the by-election,” he announced.

The Barisan chairman said this after officiating the closing ceremony of Student Civil Defence (Sispa) training held at Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia here on Sunday (Aug 18).

Asked who would be the candidate for the by-election, he said he had received a long list of nominees.

“We will discuss this with the state Umno and Kluang division. What's important is that the candidate must be winnable, accessible and likeable,” he added.

The Mahkota state seat was declared vacant after the death of assemblyman Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain on Aug 2.

The Election Commission has set Nomination Day on Sept 14 and Polling Day on Sept 28.
