Kindling the patriotic flame

BALIK PULAU: Sworn to protect the country at all costs when he was serving in the army, ex-soldier Abdul Hamid Hussin has continued to show his patriotic spirit even after retirement.

Every year during National Day month, the 73-year-old’s wooden house in Kampung Titi Teras here would become the main attraction for shutterbugs with the sight of hundreds of fluttering mini Jalur Gemilang.

From the rooftop to the garden, every corner of his house is adorned with the bold red, blue, white and yellow of the Malaysian flag.

From early August, Abdul Hamid would devote countless hours to meticulously decorating his house with the vibrant Jalur Gemilang and state flags.

“I’ve been doing this for the past 10 years and started with just a few flags.

“Over time, the number of flags has grown to hundreds, with many of them reused from previous years,” he said when met at his house recently.

He and his wife Juriah Semat, 60, even painted the house pillars in the colours of the flag.

“It has become a tradition for us to do this whenever National Day approaches.

“We hope this can instil a sense of patriotism among Malaysians who see this,” said Abdul Hamid.

Despite having to fork out his own money for the decorations, he remains steadfast in his commitment to this annual tribute to the nation.

“The cost of the decorations is a small price to pay for the joy and sense of unity I aim to foster within the community.”
