Man dies after car skids, turns turtle in Kota Marudu banana farm

KOTA KINABALU: A man was killed after the car he was driving skidded and turned turtle at a banana farm in Kampung Langkon, Kota Marudu on Monday (Aug 19) morning.

The victim, identified as Grandson Poyo, 36, was pinned to his seat and confirmed dead at the scene.

Sabah Fire and Rescue Services Department senior assistant fire commander Mohd Ishak Amran said a team of 10 men, led by operations commander Muhamaddini Ghani, was rushed to the scene after receiving the distress call at 1.02am.

Firemen arrived at the scene 13 minutes later and found a car had turned turtle in between banana trees with the victim still inside the car.

“Initial investigations revealed that the victim had lost control of his vehicle before it skidded, rammed the banana trees and turned turtle.

“We managed to extricate the victim from the car, but he was confirmed dead by the medical officials at the scene. The body has been handed over to the police for further action,” said Mohd Ishak.

Operations were called off at 1.42am.

Meanwhile, in Sabah’s interior Tenom district, firemen received a call about a man who is feared missing after failing to return home since Friday (Aug 16) morning.

The 10.26pm distress call was made on Sunday (Aug 18) by family members of Joseph Silang, 60, who was last seen leaving home at Kampung Baru Jumpa in Tenom, and walking towards his farm two days earlier.

Three firemen, led by operation commander Shahril Sulaiman, were rushed to the scene after receiving the call, arriving at the scene, some 27km from the Tenom fire station, at 11.14pm.

“Prior to contacting us, villagers had also launched their own search operation but to no avail.

“We ended the search and rescue operation at 2.50am and will resume on Monday morning,” said Mohd Ishak.
