A MALAYSIAN man was arrested in Taiwan on his first day of work as a money mule for a scam syndicate, reported Sin Chew Daily.
Taichung city police received a tip-off that a syndicate was carrying out a scam in the Dongshi district where a victim was duped into believing that he was given the privilege of buying T$5.6mil (RM76,8060) worth of initial public offering shares.
The syndicate sent the Malaysian, who pretended to be a business analyst, to collect the money.
Little did he know that the police had been aware of the case and had set a trap to ambush him. He was arrested before the exchange could take place.
It was revealed that the man’s friend had offered him the chance to work for the syndicate, and even bought him the flight tickets.
He had only just arrived the day before being arrested and was expected to be charged with fraud.
It was reported that the police had earlier discovered a syndicate on social media that impersonated a well-known finance YouTuber.
The syndicate would add unsuspecting victims to their social media group and sell them investment products, which purportedly offered lucrative returns.
