Teacher under investigation for belittling orang asli on social media

KUALA LUMPUR: The state education authorities are probing a religious school teacher for allegedly belittling the orang asli community on social media.

The teacher allegedly made the remarks following the Nenggiri by-election on Saturday (Aug 17).

State Education acting director Putra Hashim said the department would investigate the case thoroughly and take action on any breach of regulations.

"Based on existing ministry guidelines, a public servant is not allowed to make a public statement, either verbally or in writing, against any policy, plan or decision of the government on any issue.

"This is also stated in a 2023 ministry circular on the use of social media," he said.

Additionally, he said employees are prohibited from making or sharing any statement or unverified information that could damage the government's image or be defamatory, seditious or obscene.

His statement came after the teacher allegedly made a viral post equating the supporters of a certain political party with the orang asli community.
