Two young lives lost to abuse

PETALING JAYA: Two children were the latest crime casualties over the weekend – one an eight-year-old girl who was allegedly abused to death by her parents while the other was a 10-year-old special needs girl who was allegedly raped and murdered by a close relative.

In Rawang, a couple have been detained for alleged abuse that led to the death of their eight-year-old daughter.

Gombak OCPD Asst Comm Noor Ariffin Mohamad Nasir said police received information on the victim’s death in an apartment in Bandar Tasik Puteri, Rawang at 3.27pm on Saturday.

“Initial investigation revealed that there were bruises on the victim’s face and lips, thigh, chin and knees.

“The body was sent to Hospital Sungai Buloh for a postmortem and the case is classified under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder,” he said in a statement yesterday.

ACP Noor Ariffin said police subsequently detained a 29-year-old man who is the girl’s stepfather and his wife, 28, at their apartment in Bandar Tasir Puteri at about 9pm on Saturday.

“The male suspect works as a security guard while his wife, who is the girl’s biological mother, is an ice-cream seller. Both have been remanded for seven days until Aug 24,” he added.

ACP Noor Ariffin said police believed the girl had been kicked and slapped as well as hit with a belt, hanger and blunt weapon.

“The victim is a Year Two pupil at a primary school in Bandar Tasik Puteri, but she has not been to school since June 24,” he said.

In SUNGAI SIPUT, Perak, police have arrested a 27-year-old man who is suspected of raping and murdering a 10-year-old Orang Asli girl, whose body was found in a swamp near Kampung Bersah, Pos Kuala Mu here.

Sungai Siput OCPD Superintendent Mohd Khaizam Ahmad Shahabudin said the man, who is a “close kin” of the victim, was arrested at his house in the village on Sunday at about 5.30pm.

“We will get a court order to remand the man on Monday.

“The case, which was earlier classified as sudden death, will now be investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder,” he told a press conference here yesterday.

The girl was reported to have gone missing on Friday at about 3pm.

A search-and-rescue operation was called on Saturday morning, with her body being found at about 4.30pm on the same day.

Supt Mohd Khaizam said the case was first classified as a missing persons case after police got a call from a villager about the girl’s disappearance.

“When the body was found, we found no physical injuries and it was reclassified as sudden death.

“After the postmortem conducted at Hospital Sungai Siput on Sunday, it was then discovered that there was foul play as there were bruises on the girl’s neck and tears on her private parts,” he said, adding that the girl has a hearing disability and was a slow learner.

“The police also believed that the victim was killed elsewhere before being dumped at the swamp,” he added.

Supt Mohd Khaizam said a few people have been called in to give their statements and information to help with the investigation.

“We will be calling more people, including the victim’s parents, close neighbours and her school to get more information,” he said.
