Taxi driver, passenger killed in crash with lorry near Muar


MUAR: A taxi driver and his passenger were killed after their vehicle crashed into a lorry at Jalan Muar-Yong Peng here.

Muar OCPD Asst Comm Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz said that the incident occurred at 4.30pm on Monday (Aug 19).

“The driver is a 60-year-old man, while the passenger is a 27-year-old foreign woman. Our initial investigation revealed that the victim veered into the opposite lane and crashed into an incoming lorry.

“The impact pushed the victim’s car back into its path before being rammed from behind by another lorry,” he said in a statement here on Tuesday (Aug 20).

ACP Raiz added that both victims were pinned inside the vehicle and were pronounced dead at the location.

“One of the lorry drivers is a 35-year-old man, and he suffered a minor injury. The other is a 48-year-old man, and he was unharmed.

“The bodies have been brought to the Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital for a post-mortem,” he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Meanwhile, in an unrelated case, a 20-year-old man was killed after losing control of his motorcycle and colliding into the road divider in the middle of the road.

Johor Baru North OCPD Asst Comm Balveer Singh said the incident occurred at 3.37am on Sunday (Aug 18) at KM17 Jalan Johor Bahru-Air Hitam.

“The victim suffered a serious injury and was pronounced dead at the location,” he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
