Applications by Indonesian students to Malaysian Universities surge by 39%

JAKARTA: Applications from Indonesian students seeking to further their studies in Malaysia have surged by 39%, as of July this year.

Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) chief executive officer Novie Tajuddin said the agency received 3,145 applications in the first seven months, compared to 2,269 during the same period last year.

He said this increase in interest underscores the strong educational ties between the two countries, which have the potential to be further strengthened.

In viewing this, he said the agency had organised the "Ayo Kuliah di Malaysia" (Let's Study in Malaysia) exhibition in Indonesia to provide students with information about the programmes offered by Malaysian higher education institutions.

The exhibition was held in four regions, touring several major cities including Java, Kalimantan, Pontianak and Sumatra, with participation from over 50 public and private institutions.

EMGS, an agency under the Higher Education Ministry, is responsible for facilitating international student visas and promoting Malaysia as a global talent and knowledge hub.

Novie said the agency is also collaborating with influencers including Indonesian alumni to share information on social media.

He said the set up of the UKM Offshore Centre in Jakarta by eight Malaysian universities earlier this month has further strengthened the branding of Malaysian higher education.
