Body of student missing after Sarawak boat sinking found


KUCHING: The body of one of three missing students from the boat which sank in Sungai Kayan at Kampung Selampit near Lundu was found on Wednesday (Aug 21).

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said the body of Vilkie Wilson, 15, was recovered at 11.58am.

"The body was found by villagers about 10m from the Bomba command post," it said in a statement.

The search continues for the two other victims, 14-year-old Alsma Jithil and 17-year-old Helena Fasha Petrus.

They were among 20 people in the boat when it sank at about 6.10am on Tuesday (Aug 20). The rest of the passengers were rescued yesterday.

The search operation resumed at 8.35am on Wednesday in a 3km radius upriver.

A dog from Bomba's K9 unit has been deployed to assist in the operation, which also involves the police, Civil Defence Force, Sarawak Security and Enforcement Unit, Sarawak Rivers Board, Sarawak Jetski Association and villagers.
