Sunway shootout: Bukit Aman probing how foreign robbery gang evaded capture for years

KUALA LUMPUR: Bukit Aman is conducting further investigations into the robbery gang linked to the foreign suspect killed in a firefight with police near Bandar Sunway.

Bukit Aman CID director Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said initial investigations revealed that the suspect and the rest of the gang entered the country in 2017.

"To know how they survived for so long, we need to investigate what other activities they did. "We also need to find out what they do with their ill-gotten gains, including if the money was sent overseas," he told a press conference after attending the closing of a behavioural science course at the Royal Malaysia Police College on Wednesday (Aug 21).

On Tuesday (Aug 20) night, a foreign suspect was killed in a shootout with police near Bandar Sunway.

In the incident, the suspect was instructed to stop but he refused to and fired at the police, with two shots hitting a police car.

Comm Mohd Shuhaily said the police had been tracking down the suspect since 2018.

"The suspect was part of a larger robbery gang linked to dozens of cases.

"The group is believed to be active within the Selangor and Kuala Lumpur area.

"We received information from our Kuala Lumpur counterparts and worked the case with Selangor police, with Bukit Aman coordinating the operation," he said.

Comm Mohd Shuhaily said the gang is believed to be responsible for multiple robberies committed since 2018, with about RM8mil worth of losses involved.

He added that around 10 members of the gang are still at large.

"All exit points of the country are being monitored," he said.

On the group's modus operandi, Comm Shuhaily said that the group would fraudulently offer services online such as selling jewellery or money changing.

They would meet victims at a hotel and take them to another location in their vehicle. Once there, other members would enter the vehicle to rob the victim.
