PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has arrested four enforcement officers for allegedly turning a blind eye to foreigners illegally entering the country who were brought in by a syndicate.
The four were among 11 suspects arrested by the MACC in the Klang Valley, Kelantan and Penang on Tuesday (Aug 20).
Sources said that the four were based at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 2 and allegedly took bribes so they would not inspect certain foreigners when entering the country.
"Three have been remanded for five days until Aug 25 and the fourth until Aug 23," the source said.
Four company owners, a manager and two agents from the syndicate were among those arrested. They were remanded for four to five days at the Putrajaya Magistrate's Court.
The suspects, aged in their 20s and 50s, allegedly set a special counter and lane for the syndicate for groups of foreigners they brought in. It is believed that this had been conducted for several years.
Thirteen handphones, several Pakistani and Indonesian passports, jewellery and RM40,000 in cash were seized during the arrests.
MACC intelligence director Datuk Zainul Darus confirmed the arrests, adding that investigations were being conducted under Section 16 of the MACC Act 2009 for accepting gratification.
