State poised to lead in wedding tourism among Chinese nationals

GEORGE TOWN: Penang is poised to become a coveted wedding destination for Chinese nationals seeking a unique blend of cultural heritage, stunning scenery and modern amenities.

Sichuan Wedding Trade Association (SWTA) president Wang Yiping said Penang’s commitment to hospitality and its growing reputation in wedding tourism makes it an exceptional choice for couples looking to celebrate their love in style.

“During our brief visit, we gained valuable insights into the Penang’s wedding industry, hospitality sector and local wedding culture.

“We will now be able to recommend Penang’s wedding offerings to clients in our own cities.

“This will not only boost spending but also encourage rich and meaningful exchanges between the two cities, particularly in terms of wedding customs and cultural practices.

“It will be highly beneficial for both regions,” he said, adding that they would also welcome Malaysian couples wanting to hold their marriage ceremony in Sichuan.

Penang Wedding Professionals Association (PWPA) president Low Chin Siang said Penang is truly a perfect place for weddings.

“Our state is rich in heritage, packed with diverse cultures and blessed with pretty scenery. These are ideal ingredients for memorable wedding moments.

“Beyond that, language is never a barrier here. Chinese couples and their families can feel right at home,” he said.

Penang tourism and creative economy committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said the move could spark an influx of Chinese nationals having their weddings in Penang.

He said the initiative would be greatly strengthened by the recent boost in flight connectivity between Penang and China, coupled with the visa-free programme. “This combination is set to generate considerable excitement, particularly among young travellers from China looking to celebrate their weddings here,” he said.

Wong said with its rich blend of historical architecture, lush greenery and serene beaches, Penang is an ideal destination for pre-wedding photoshoots.

“The city centre is also conveniently close to the outskirts. In just a few days, couples can take wedding photos in a variety of stunning locations, from the flora-filled Botanic Gardens, the beachfront along Batu Ferringhi to the quaint streets in George Town,” he said.

Nineteen representatives from China comprising wedding industry stakeholders were brought here for a familiarisation trip for five days.

Earlier, a memorandum of understanding was signed between SWTA and PWPA at St Giles Wembley Hotel here yesterday.

The initiative known as “Say I Do in Penang” is to promote bilateral wedding tourism and exchange in ideas and culture between the two associations.

Also at the event were Penang Global Tourism chief executive officer Ooi Chok Yan, Malaysian Association of Hotels Penang chairman Tony Goh, Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents Penang Chapter chairman Carolyn Leong and Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry’s Penang Licensing and Enforcement Unit head Hadilah Razali.
