PKR leaves sexual harassment investigation involving former MP to the police, says Fahmi

PUTRAJAYA: PKR will leave the investigation of a sexual harassment case that allegedly involves a former party member to the police, says Fahmi Fadzil

“In regards to the allegation that a former PKR member of parliament was accused of sexual harassment, we have not received any information yet.

“We leave it to the police to conduct their investigation over the matter,” said the PKR information chief in a weekly post-Cabinet meeting press conference here on Wednesday (Aug 21).

On Monday (Aug 19), it was reported that the police had opened an investigation into a former MP alleged to be involved in a sexual harassment case involving a woman at a prominent supermarket in Kota Damansara, Selangor.

Petaling Jaya police chief ACP Shahrulnizam Ja’afar said they received a report from the victim in her twenties on Aug 6, claiming she was sexually harassed by a man while at the supermarket.

Shahrulnizam said the police found an 18-second video related to the alleged incident on social media on Aug 18.

Meanwhile, the Communications Minister said he would raise the matter of a sexual harassment case involving a female journalist with the police.

Fahmi said this after the case which happened during the Sungai Bakap by-election last month was classified as no further action (NFA)

“I have just received information on the matter, so I cannot comment further.

“But I am planning to raise the matter with the police,” he added.

The incident happened on July 3, and it involved a female journalist who was on duty during the state by-election.

Several other media personnel allegedly witnessed the incident before the man, who claimed to be employed by a political party, was arrested.

“I have spoken to the journalist and believe her workplace has provided her with the needed support.

“We will make sure that she is given the proper protection. I urge journalists, men or women who faced sexual harassment, to lodge a police report and inform me as well.

“We will ensure that journalists are given the protection they need and justice is served,” he added.
