Bukit Aman intensifies probe into suspect killed in shootout

KUALA LUMPUR: Bukit Aman is intensifying its investigation into the activities of a foreign suspect who was killed in a shootout with police near Bandar Sunway.

Bukit Aman CID director Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain explained that the focus is on the suspect, his robbery gang and the whereabouts of stolen valuables worth approximately RM8mil.

“Our initial investigations indicate that the suspect and his gang have been operating in the country since 2017.

“To know how they survived this long, we need to investigate whether they have other work and what they did with their ill-gotten gains, including whether they were sending the money abroad,” he told a press conference after attending the closing of the Behavioural Science Course at the Royal Malaysia Police College yesterday.

On Tuesday night, the foreign suspect was shot dead after a confrontation with police. Despite being ordered to stop, he opened fire, hitting a police car twice.

Comm Mohd Shuhaily revealed that the police had been tracking the suspect down since 2018.

“The suspect was part of a larger robbery gang with dozens of cases linked to them.

“This group is believed to be active in the Selangor and Kuala Lumpur areas. Coordination between the Selangor and Kuala Lumpur police, with oversight from Bukit Aman, was crucial in this operation,” he said.

He added that the gang is suspected of being behind around RM8mil in losses from robberies committed since 2018.

There are around 10 members of the gang still at large, he said.

“All exit points from the country are being monitored,” Comm Mohd Shuhaily stated.

On the gang’s modus operandi, he explained that they would offer services online, such as selling jewellery or currency exchange.Victims would be lured to a hotel, then transported with a vehicle to another location, where other gang members would join in to carry out the robbery.
