Candidate for Mahkota polls should come from Wanita Umno, says Noraini Ahmad

KUALA LUMPUR: The candidate for the upcoming Mahkota by-election should be from Wanita Umno to continue the legacy of the late Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain, says Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad.

The Wanita Umno chief said the seat is important for Barisan Nasional as they lost in GE14 but the coalition recaptured it in GE15.

"In the 2018 elections, Barisan lost the seat by a 1,667-vote majority but Sharifah Azizah won the seat with a majority of more than 5,000 (in GE15).

"We hope that the supreme council meeting tonight (Thursday, Aug 22) can consider our proposal for the Mahkota by-election candidate to remain a Wanita Umno member," she said during her winding-up speech at the Wanita Umno delegates' assembly here on Thursday.

On Aug 2, Sharifah Azizah, who was receiving treatment at Enche' Besar Hajjah Khalsom Hospital in Kluang, died at the age of 63.

The Kluang Wanita Umno division chief had previously served as Penawar assemblyman from May 2018 to March 2022.

Earlier on Thursday at the Umno General Assembly, party president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the meeting would consider all proposals made during the candidate selection process for the Sept 28 polls.
