Lorry driver flees scene after fatal motorcycle collision in Kulai

KULAI: A teenager was killed in a hit-and-run accident when the motorcycle he was riding with another teenager collided with a lorry near here.

Kulai OCPD Supt Tan Seng Lee said the incident happened at Jalan Desa Idaman, Taman Desa Idaman, on Thursday (Aug 22) at 4.30am.

He said the 16-year-old victim, a school dropout and the 15-year-old pillion rider, a student, were travelling from Taman Senai Jaya to Taman Desa Idaman Senai when the incident took place.

Supt Tan said they were heading to a sundry shop, riding the motorcycle belonging to the victim’s sister, and added that the victim did not possess a valid driver's license.

“The lorry driver switched from the left lane to the right lane to make a U-turn, causing the incident,’’ he said in a statement on Thursday.

Supt Tan said the driver had fled the scene and added that he had yet to come forward to lodge a police report.

“The victim was pronounced dead by the paramedic team at the accident scene, and the pillion rider who suffered injuries was sent to Kulai Hospital,’’ he said both of them were wearing crash helmets.

Supt Tan said the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving which caused death.

He asked those with information on the hit-and-run accident case to contact the Kulai Police Contingent Traffic Investigation Officer, Insp Ahmad Safuan Abu Naim, at 017-7573507.
