Cars damaged and swept by flood in Langkawi

LANGKAWI: A car was swept into the river while several other vehicles parked near the Langkawi Cable Car attraction here were damaged by strong currents from a flash flood of 0.5 metre depth following a heavy downpour here.

Langkawi district OPCD ACP Shariman Ashari said the storm from 1pm to 2.30pm also damaged food and clothing stalls at the resort nearby.

"Two cafes, eight stalls in the food court as well as five kiosks and a clothing store each were reported to have been affected by the flood.

"Police are securing the entrance to the area involved to prevent the public from entering until the water recedes," he said in a press statement on Friday (Aug 23).

Meanwhile, Langkawi Civil Defence Force officer Khairul Afzan Yasin said the situation in the area has resumed to normal after the rain stopped at about 2.40pm.
