JOHOR BARU: Coronation Square is set to be an integral part of the Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link between Johor Baru and Singapore as it will be connected via an elevated walkway and also house about 781 parking bays for the rail link project.

Coronade Properties Sdn Bhd sales manager Ong Tee Hui said that connectivity was paramount in this fully integrated development, which would include elevated walkways and flyovers among major roads such as Jalan Tebrau and Jalan Tun Abdul Razak.

“We are building a 210m walkway to the RTS. There will also be a 250m walkway from Persada Johor to the Bangunan Sultan Ibrahim Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) complex,” she said, adding that the other link was funded by the Public Private Partnership Unit or Ukas under the Prime Minister’s Department.

Ong added that in future there would also be connectivity between RTS and the present CIQ complex.

“All these connections will form a loop and it makes us an ideal location for those wanting to commute between Johor Baru and Singapore,” she said, adding that there has been a lot of interest in their projects especially with the recent announcement that the RTS project was more than 80% completed.

On Tuesday, Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp), via its unit Malaysia Rapid Transit System Sdn Bhd (MRTS), signed a sale and purchase agreement with Coronade Properties Sdn Bhd for the acquisition of 781 parking bays at Coronation Square, Johor Baru.

These parking bays will be dedicated to Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link commuters, further enhancing connectivity and accessibility for those using the cross-border service between Johor Baru and Singapore.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said that once the project is completed, the additional parking lots for cars and motorcycles dedicated to RTS Link commuters at Coronation Square will be owned and managed by MRT Corp, which would be a source of recurring income.

“Although we need to purchase these parking spaces, the acquisition is a long-term investment, as we will own and manage them as recurring income in the future.

“I want to stress the importance of connectivity and integration elements between these parking bays and the Bukit Chagar station,” he said at a press conference after witnessing the signing of the agreement between MRTS and Coronade Properties here on Tuesday.

Loke also urged developers and building owners around Bukit Chagar to integrate with the Bukit Chagar station by building a pedestrian bridge.

The agreement was signed by MRT Corp chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Zarif Hashim and Coronade Properties director of corporate relations Datin Paduka Alinah Ahmad, and witnessed by Loke and MRT Corp chairman Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad.

The construction of the RTS Link rail infrastructure project between Johor Baru and Singapore had reached 83% progress by the end of July.

With system installation expected to begin by year-end, MRT Corp will build a new multi-storey Park 'N Ride parking facility in Bukit Chagar for RTS Link passengers, including 1,500 parking lots, complementing the additional parking bays at Coronation Square, which is located just 400 metres from the Bukit Chagar station.

Coronation Square, a RM5bil fully integrated development, is a key component of the Ibrahim International Business District and poised to become a landmark in Johor Baru.

In 2015, Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar of Johor launched the Ibrahim International Business District (IIBD) transformation plan to redevelop or regenerate about 101ha within the city centre.

His Majesty in the past has not only stressed on the importance of Coronation Square and RTS but also on the importance of a good traffic system in the vicinity.

Ong said that to date they have spent a substantial sum to build roads, ramps and infrastructure to help disperse traffic as they did not want the area to be congested in the future.

“We have also invested to improve the underground drainage system especially on Jalan Trus,” she said, adding that their project also comes with almost 5,000 parking bays.
