Designate KL's Jalan TAR as bumiputra Special Economic Zone, Umno delegate proposes

KUALA LUMPUR: Consider designating Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman as a Special Economic Zone for bumiputra culture, arts and heritage, an Umno delegate proposes.

Kuala Lumpur Umno delegate Datuk Tengku Azman Tengku Zainol Abidin said it was essential to include the Malay identity, especially culture and arts, there as it was the community’s go-to spot for shopping especially during Ramadan.

“We want Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman to be rejuvenated with the stores of Malay traders upgraded in line with the implementation of Putera35.

“Believe me, doing so will also further empower our people,” he said when debating the presidential address during the Umno general assembly here on Friday (Aug 23).

Tengku Azman also urged for Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman to be recognised as a tourist spot.

“Definitely, it will be a focus destination and among the places you have to go to when in Kuala Lumpur,” he said.

“Save Jalan TAR from being ‘invaded’ by foreigners who are gaining profits while our people are still struggling.

“We don’t want our people to be begging in our own capital while others are benefitting,” he added.

Tengku Azman said this is also not an impossible task as Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi successfully rejuvenated the Bukit Bintang red zone into Arab Park.

Separately, he urged the government to implement or cooperate with any quarters, including the private sector, to provide affordable mental health sessions.

Tengku Azman said mental health sessions should also be included as part of insurance packages.

“The high cost of living burdens society and contributes to increasing mental health issues among society. Stress must not be taken lightly,” he said.

The Umno general assembly began Friday and will end on Saturday (Aug 24).
