Flash flood greets flood of party delegates

KUALA LUMPUR: The Umno wing meetings at the World Trade Centre here were temporarily halted after flash floods hit the open-air car park yesterday.

Delegates who parked at the parking lot next to the Klang-Gombak river were seen rushing to their vehicles after warning sirens and an announcement blared over the speakers repeatedly.

“Whoever is parked at the open-air parking lot, please remove your cars immediately. Water levels at the river have exceeded dangerous levels,” the announcement said.

Surrounding areas of the World Trade Centre were also inundated by the flash flood. Delegates were seen rushing outside the venue to move their vehicles.

Several were seen successfully driving the vehicles to higher ground while other cars were half submerged.

Members of the security detail on duty at the venue, including the People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela) and Civil Defence Force, were also at the deep end helping delegates move their vehicles to higher ground.

The flash floods happened after about a two-hour downpour. The flood waters had receded at 7.30pm.
