Kluang Pemuda chief Syed Hussien may contest by-election

KUALA LUMPUR: Kluang Umno division chief Datuk Md Jais Sarday (pic) has stated that there are no issues if Kluang Pemuda Youth chief Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah is nominated as the Mahkota by-election candidate.

He mentioned that the list of proposed names for the by-election is still under review by party leaders.

“It is within the Pemuda’s rights to nominate Syed Hussien as their candidate.

"What is more important now is that the candidate must be among the leaders of the division, either at the top or wing level,” said Md Jais during a press conference at the 2024 Umno General Assembly media room on Thursday (Aug 23).

“We leave it to the leaders to decide as we need to win the by-election. I hope whoever is nominated, the candidate will be able to maintain our stronghold on the Mahkota seat and continue to strengthen the party,” he added.

Md Jais said the division will use the same formula for the by-election campaign as it did during the 15th General Election.

In the 2022 general election, Umno won a majority of more than 5,000 votes with its candidate, the late Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain.

On Thursday (Aug 22), Umno Youth nominated Syed Hussien as the candidate for the Mahkota by-election, which will be held on Sept 28.

Its chief, Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh, also requested that Umno supreme council member Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Dahlan, who is in charge of the party’s working committee, bring their proposal to the council meeting on Thursday night.

Meanwhile, Wanita Umno has also proposed that the candidate for the Mahkota by-election come from their party wing.

Its chief, Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad, hopes the supreme council leaders will consider naming a candidate from Wanita Umno to continue Sharifah Azizah’s legacy.

The polls are being held due to the Mahkota seat becoming vacant due to the passing of Sharifah Azizah on Aug 2.
