KOTA KINABALU: Sabah's move to step up power generation capacity by another 700MW must be backed up by upgrading the grid system, says National Consumer Foundation state chairman David Chan.
He said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor's recent announcement that power generation will increase by 700MW via hydro and gas generation projects was positive as it would meet power needs of the state.
But, Chan said the authorities should not overlook the importance of upgrading the power grid infrastructure.
Chan said that Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd in collaboration with the state and federal governments, must prioritise upgrading the power grid to ensure sustainable and reliable energy to meet current and future needs of the people.
Chan said that Sabah’s power infrastructure needs a comprehensive and strategic upgrade, especially considering the state's 227kV grid system.
"This grid plays a critical role in the distribution of electricity across the state, and is not fully connected, particularly in the southern region.
"The existing grid's limitations pose a significant challenge to the integration of the additional 700MW into the system," he said in a statement Friday ((Oct 23).
He said that for Sabah to fully benefit from the proposed increase in generation capacity, it was important to upgrade the grid infrastructure that cost several billion ringgit.
"But this investment is essential to ensure that the generated power can be efficiently distributed throughout the state," he said.
He said the current priority for SESB should be to focus on enhancing the grid system to future proof the state's energy infrastructure for the next 10 to 15 years.
"Without a robust grid, any increase in power generation may lead to inefficiencies, wastage, or even system overloads.
"It is imperative that SESB addresses these grid challenges before injecting additional power into the system," he added.
"A well-planned and resilient grid will be the backbone that will ensure all regions of Sabah, including the southern areas, have access to consistent and stable power," Chan said.
