KOTA KINABALU: Sabah has given the green light for a string of critical energy projects that will generate a total of 700MW of electricity as the state looks to cope with growing demand.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said among the main initiatives approved by the Sabah Energy Council (MTS) were a hydroelectric project and natural gas power plant.
This would ensure adequate electricity supply for the near future, he added.
He said state sector regulator the Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) also briefed the MTS meeting on Thursday (Aug 22) about developments with other vital power generation projects.
These projects were launched following decisions made at MTS’ first meeting in June.
“They include future energy projects, such as hydroelectric development through the Sabah Hydro Development Masterplan currently being conducted by ECoS,” Hajiji said in a statement on Friday (Aug 23).
In addition, an ocean thermal energy conversion (Otec) plant pilot project was also being implemented, he added.
The Chief Minister hoped these efforts would yield the best results in achieving a reliable, affordable and sustainable energy future.
These efforts also aligned with the Sabah Energy Roadmap and Masterplan 2040 (SE-RAMP 2040), he noted.
The MTS was established following the transfer of energy regulatory powers from the Federal Government to Sabah and to replace the Sabah Electricity Supply and Tariff Planning and Implementation Committee.
