Viral message of kidnapper is false, says cop

KUALA LUMPUR: A viral message that claimed the driver of a grey-coloured car, which was parked in front of SMK Seri Permaisuri in Cheras, was planning to kidnap students, turned out to be false.

Cheras OCPD Asst Comm Ravinder Singh Sarban Singh said police detected the viral message at about 4.25pm on Thursday (Aug 22).

"The message had the photo of the car parked in front of the school and warned people that this driver was planning to kidnap students who were walking or waiting for their parents," he said in a statement on Friday (Aug 23).

The driver of the case came forward and lodged a police report at about 6.22pm on Thursday, he said.

"The foreign man claimed that he was parked near the school while waiting to pick up his fiancee, who was selling items in front of the school.

"He denied that he was there to kidnap students," he said.

ACP Ravinder Singh said the man has also met with the school management on the matter.

"We advise the public not to raise speculations or assumptions that might cause confusion and public distress.

"We urge those with information on any criminal activities or incidents to contact Cheras police at 03-9284 5050/ 5051, KL police hotline at 03-2115 9999 or any nearest police station.
