Mahkota polls: DAP will support Umno’s candidate, says Kulai MP

KULAI: DAP will support and assist Umno's candidate in the upcoming Mahkota by-election, says the party's national publicity secretary Teo Nie Ching.

She said that the party, particularly its Kluang division, has started having meetings to look into ways to help Ummo win the election, which is set to be held next month.

"Pakatan Harapan, including DAP, will give its fullest support to Umno and go out to ensure that the unity government candidate wins the seat.

"We (DAP) have started preparations, including having several meetings with our members in Kluang as they are the ones who will be involved the most in this election,” she said in response to questions on preparations for the Mahkota by-election.

Teo, who is also Kulai MP, said this to the media when met during the Kulai parliament office's health screening programme at Dewan Terbuka Hutan Bandar Putra.

She said that Kluang MP Wong Shu Qi and Mengkibol assemblyman Chew Chong Sin, both from DAP, have also had meetings with party members as part of the preparations for the election.

“We will also send representatives from the party to attend the meeting between Pakatan and Barisan Nasional to discuss the election next Monday (Aug 26),” she said.

It was earlier reported that Barisan chairman and Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi will be attending a special meeting in Johor with Pakatan here on Aug 26.

The Mahkota state seat became vacant when its assemblyman, Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain, from Umno, passed away on Friday (Aug 2), three days after she was hospitalised.

During the Johor state election in 2022, Sharifah Azizah won the Mahkota seat with a 5,166 majority against Amanah's Taqiuddin Cheman, Bersatu's Mohamad Nor Lingan and Mohamed Noor Suleiman from Parti Warisan.

The Election Commission has set Sept 28 for the Mahkota state by-election in Johor.

Nomination Day for the by-election has been set for Sept 14 while early voting will take place on Sept 24.
