KOTA KINABALU: The green light has been given to a string of critical energy projects that would generate a total of 700MW of electricity as Sabah looks to restore its power grid amid growing demand, says Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.
The Chief Minister said among the main initiatives approved by the Sabah Energy Council (MTS) were a hydroelectric project and natural gas power plant.
Hajiji said the state sector regulator, Energy Commission of Sabah (Ecos), also briefed the MTS meeting on Thursday on the development of other important power generation projects.
These projects were launched following decisions made during MTS’ first meeting in June.
“They include decisions on future energy source projects, such as the potential and method of widespread hydroelectric development in Sabah through the Sabah Hydro Development Masterplan currently being conducted by Ecos,” Hajiji said in a statement yesterday.
He said ocean thermal energy conversion (Otec) plants were also being developed through a pilot project.
The Chief Minister expressed hope that the efforts would help the state achieve a reliable, affordable and sustainable energy future.
These efforts, he added, aligned with the Sabah Energy Roadmap and Masterplan 2040.
MTS was set up following the transfer of energy regulatory powers from the Federal Government to Sabah and replaces the Sabah electricity supply and tariff planning and implementation committee.
