KUALA LUMPUR: The family of the missing 48-year-old Vijayalaksmi will be provided with assistance, including a visa extension, as the search for the sinkhole victim continues.
Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif said that the relatives of the Indian national who are still in Malaysia are given accommodation, food, and counselling sessions.
“The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) is also working with the Indian High Commission for the next of kin visa extensions.
“Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), as the local authority responsible for the city of Kuala Lumpur, is committed to the search and rescue (SAR) efforts in collaboration with other partner agencies,” she said in a statement on Sunday (Aug 25).
She also stated that the area around Kuala Lumpur and Jalan Masjid India is still safe.
“I chaired a coordination meeting with partner agencies, and based on the information obtained, the situation in Kuala Lumpur is under control and safe to visit.
"City residents can continue their daily routines as usual (business as usual)."
Maimunah added that DBKL had activated a task force with SAR experts, including PDRM, the Fire and Rescue Department, the Malaysian Civil Defense Force, and the Minerals and Geoscience Department.
Vijayalaksmi, a tourist from India, fell into an eight-metre-deep sinkhole on Jalan Masjid India after the ground collapsed while she was walking to a nearby temple at 8.22am on Friday (Aug 23).
