JOHOR BARU: A retiree has decorated his house using recyclable items to celebrate National Day.
Hassri Abdul Kadir, 58, said every August, he would decorate his house in Kampung Bendahara here with Jalur Gemilang and iconic landmarks in the country.
“For the Petronas Twin Towers and Kuala Lumpur Tower, I used more than 100 mineral water bottles that I have collected since early this year.
“The twin towers alone are more than 2.13m tall and I have included bulbs so that they will light up at night,” he said yesterday.
Hassri said the Petronas Twin Towers and Kuala Lumpur Towers were not only iconic in Malaysia but throughout the world.
The father of three said most people from outside the country know about Malaysia because of the two landmark buildings.
Hassri added that, besides making the mini versions of the two buildings, he had also created a mini army tank as part of this year’s decorations.
He said he decided to make the tank as a tribute to security officers and personnel who have put their lives on the line to defend Malaysia over the years.
“Our security personnel from the army and police force have done so much to make sure that we are able to live in peace and harmony,” he said, adding that it took him two weeks to build the tank.
Hassri, who is originally from Kota Tinggi, said the mini army tank was made from small pieces of wood that he found around his housing area.
“For those wanting to decorate their houses for Merdeka, it is much cheaper to use recycled items instead of buying new items.
“I spent less than RM100. The most expensive stuff I bought were the glue gun and glue sticks,” he said. Hassri also decorated his house with 300 Malaysian flags of various sizes.
“I just love the month of August as it is when we all come together and celebrate our nation’s independence,” he said, adding that all Malaysians should fly the Jalur Gemilang at their homes during Merdeka.
