PETALING JAYA: MCA will work hard to ensure Barisan Nasional wins the upcoming Mahkota by-election in Johor, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

The MCA president said Barisan is coordinating between all component parties to ensure its election machinery is effective throughout the campaign period.

“MCA will work tirelessly in the Mahkota by-election campaign so that the Barisan candidate is able to secure an absolute victory,” he said in a Facebook post after a meeting between Barisan’s top leaders on the polls scheduled for late September.

Dr Wee said the meeting was attended by Barisan chairman and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Johor Barisan leaders, and senior officials from Johor Pakatan Harapan.

The Election Commission has set Sept 28 as polling day for the Mahkota by-election, while nomination and early voting have been set for Sept 14 and 24, respectively.

The seat fell vacant after the death of assemblywoman Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain, 63, on Aug 2.

Sharifah Azizah, a former Johor Wanita Umno chief, won with a majority of 5,166 votes in the March 2022 state election.
