Couple caught running drug lab in upscale area

JOHOR BARU: For the past three months, a couple have been using a terrace house in an affluent neighbourhood here as a drug processing lab.

Its well-kept garden belied the notorious goings-on in the house where police found various machines, tools and chemical materials to make the drugs.

Johor police chief Comm M. Kumar said four raids were launched around Iskandar Puteri and Johor Baru between 3.30pm and 11.30pm on Aug 17.

In the first raid, police arrested a 31-year-old foreign man at a gated residential area here, where police discovered the drug lab.

“Following the first arrest, we nabbed a 38-year-old Malaysian woman at a roadside in Taman Setia Indah. She brought the police to a house in Bukit Indah and an apartment near Taman Daya.

“The female suspect led the police to discover various drugs worth more than RM2mil kept at the two premises,” he said in a press conference here yesterday.

Comm Kumar said among the drugs seized were 3.6kg of ecstasy powder worth more than RM613,000, 20.2 litres of liquid ecstasy valued at RM1.3mil, seven eramine 5 pills worth RM140, 42 pills of ecstasy estimated to cost RM2,100, 40 pills of nitrazepam (RM160) and 2.6kg of syabu worth RM83,000.

He said the two suspects, who have no prior criminal record, have been placed under remand until Aug 31 to assist in the investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act.
