DBKL cancels Merdeka Eve celebrations scheduled on Aug 30

KUALA LUMPUR: The 2024 Merdeka Eve celebrations organised by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) scheduled to take place at Dataran Merdeka on Aug 30 have been cancelled.

DBKL announced in a post on its Facebook page on Wednesday (Aug 28) that the cancellation was in respect of the victim and a number of recent incidents around the city of Kuala Lumpur.

DBKL also invited the public to appreciate the meaning of National Day by showcasing their patriotism.

The sinkhole incident last Friday along Jalan Masjid India resulted in an Indian woman, identified as Vijayalaksmi, 48, being swallowed after falling into an eight-metre deep hole while the search and rescue operation continued for the sixth day on Wednesday.

DBKL, in a statement on Wednesday night, informed that the Fire and Rescue Department team had entered the sewage channel upstream from the sewage tunnel at Wisma Yakin here, while manual shoring (temporary support system) and excavation work had also been carried out.

The statement added that the Mineral and Geosciences Department's search using ground-penetrating radar (GPR) will continue. – Bernama
