KUANTAN: Pahang police recorded 45 fraud cases involving teachers, with losses amounting to RM1.2mil, in the first seven months of the year.
State police chief Comm Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said fraud case statistics involving teachers from January to July saw a drop from 61 in the same period last year, with losses of RM1.45mil.
"This data shows a decrease in fraud cases involving teachers in this state.
"However, there is an increase in the overall losses by victims from various sectors (to scams).
"This indicates that such cases have not dropped and are at a worrying level.
"In total, there have been 1,228 scam cases recorded, with losses of RM59mil, in various sectors," he told a press conference here on Thursday (Aug 29).
Earlier, Comm Yahaya officiated a 2024 state-level anti-scam awareness seminar at SMK Tengku Afzan.
When asked about the trend of commercial crime fraud among educators, Comm Yahaya said investment, purchase of nonexistent goods, and the Macau scam were among the highest recorded cases and that such syndicates targeted retirees.
On Thursday's seminar, he said the programme will be continued from time to time to increase awareness of these crimes, as well as the latest scam tactics, among teachers to help them avoid falling victim.
"We also hope that this programme can be extended by (participants) sharing the knowledge and information obtained to their students as well," he said.
Asked about latest developments in the death of a woman in her Indera Mahkota home here on Aug 14, he said the results of the post-mortem had been received.
"The autopsy found that there was compression and pressure on the neck. There is a criminal element and we have classified it as murder,” he said.
"The body of the deceased can be claimed. However, we are still conducting further investigations to obtain new information or evidence.
"Four family members of the woman who were previously remanded have been released,” he said.
