Sinkhole incident: Indian High Commissioner visits site in Kuala Lumpur

KUALA LUMPUR: Indian High Commissioner to Malaysia B.N. Reddy visited Jalan Masjid India on Thursday (Aug 29) to enquire about developments in an ongoing search and rescue (SAR) operation for a 48-year-old Indian national who was swallowed by a sinkhole last week.

Reddy, who arrived with another embassy official at about 3.50pm, spent about 10 minutes at the site and was briefed by Dang Wangi deputy police chief Supt Nuzulan Mohd Din on the operations.

Earlier, personnel from the Department of Mineral and Geoscience of Malaysia (JMG) arrived at the sinkhole site and were spotted using ground-penetrating radar equipment to scan the area for clues.

Thursday (Aug 29) marks a week since Indian national Vijayalaksmi was swallowed into the sinkhole and remains untraceable despite dogged SAR efforts by the authorities.

The foreigner was walking on a pavement with her family when she fell and disappeared into the sinkhole early on Aug 23.

Exasperated rescuers have searched about seven kilometres of underground sewer lines which lead to the Indah Water sewerage plant in Pantai Dalam but are yet to see light at the end of the tunnel.
