Perikatan to name Mahkota candidate next week

KLUANG: Perikatan Nasional has received the names of three candidates for the Mahkota by-election and will unveil its choice in early September, says Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali.

The Perikatan information chief said this would give the candidate ample time to begin the groundwork in the state constituency, which has some 66,300 voters.

“In the past, we would only announce our candidate two days before nomination day.

“However, I was informed that this time, we will make the announcement sooner as the number of voters here is quite high.

“We expect to reveal the name of our candidate after National Day, sometime in early September,” Mohamed Azmin said after attending a meeting on preparations for the by-election here yesterday.

He said the coalition received three candidate names endorsed by Johor Perikatan and submitted to Perikatan chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

“We will be having a meeting to decide on the candidate,” said Mohamed Azmin, adding that Johor Perikatan members had already begun the groundwork for the by-election.

On Aug 14, Johor Perikatan chairman Datuk Dr Sahruddin Jamal said the names of three potential candidates, including newcomers and those with prior electoral experience, had been submitted to its central leadership for consideration.

The Election Commission has set Sept 28 for polling, with nomination day on Sept 14 and early voting on Sept 24.

The seat fell vacant following the death of assemblyman Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain, 63, on Aug 2.

Sharifah Azizah, a former Johor Wanita Umno chief, won the seat with a majority of 5,166 votes in the March 2022 state election.
