Unique martial display up north

GEORGE TOWN: Look out for the unique presentation of silent march by the Royal Malaysian Navy and a combat dance performance by the police at the state- level National Day parade in Jalan Padang Kota Lama tomorrow.

The parade will also feature the pass-by of the Gempita Shield, an 8x8 amphibious multi-role armoured vehicle.

Traditional performances such as the singing of the national anthem Negaraku and state anthem Untuk Negeri Kita, the raising of the Jalur Gemilang, as well as choir and dances by various schools and groups are the other items to look out for.

Penang Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak and his wife Toh Puan Khadijah Mohd Nor, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, legislative assembly speaker Datuk Seri Law Choo Kiang and other state dignitaries will also be present.

Over 10,000 participants in 126 contingents will take part, with 106 groups comprising 7,190 participants on foot. Twenty motorcades involving 1,078 participants will be in 714 vehicles.

The parade will start at 7.30am and end at 11.30am.

The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) said sections of several roads in the area will be closed to traffic to make way for the parade.

These are Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah, Jalan Larut, Lebuh King, Lebuh Union, Lebuh Pantai, Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling, Lebuh Bishop, Lebuh Penang, Lebuh Light, Gat Lebuh Chulia and Pengkalan Weld.

Northeast district police chief Asst Comm Razlam Ab Hamid said 345 police personnel will be on duty to oversee and manage traffic during the celebration.
