AS WE celebrate our 67th National Day, let us take a moment to be grateful to those who selflessly paid the price for independence.
The freedoms, peace and prosperity we enjoy today can be attributed to our founding fathers.
Then Umno president Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra al-Haj, MCA president Tun Tan Cheng Lock and MIC president Tun VT Sambanthan formed the Alliance which united the races.
The Alliance went on to achieve independence for Malaya on Aug 31, 1957.
Fast forward to today and the unity forged over six decades ago seems more fragile, especially among the competing political parties and leaders. But it does not have to be that way for the rest of us.
For this year’s National Day special, we want to pay tribute to those who served and continue to serve in uniform to safeguard the country.
Alongside them are ordinary men and women who strive to educate, foster unity and create a fairer society for everyone.
There are others who selflessly put themselves in harm’s way during times of crisis.
These Malaysians are colour-blind in their mindset. For them, serving and helping those of other races or religions are not an issue.
The theme for our special this year is simply, “Our nation’s heroes”.
It is impossible to feature the countless Malaysians who deserve the acclaim, so we select a number of individuals and organisations representative of the nation.
These heroes, conduits of unity, are all around us – in our families, our social circles, schools, workplaces and places of worship.
This National Day, we invite you, dear readers, to join us in expressing our thanks to these individuals in our lives, who deserve our accolades.
