PETALING JAYA: A new legislation, which is to be known as the Mental Capacity Act, will include issues related to psychology.
This was revealed at the Dewan Rakyat via a written parliamentary reply dated July 10.
According to the Prime Minister’s Department, which provided the reply, the government is proceeding with the drafting of the Bill.
“The Bill is still in the early stages of planning and will require an inclusive study and engagements with stakeholders.”
This is due to the fact that the proposed Act will impact existing laws such as the Mental Health Act (Act 615) and policies concerning senior citizens, among others.
“The involvement of all stakeholders is important so that the proposed Act could address the gaps in Act 615.”
The written reply was in response to Rodziah Ismail (PH-Ampang), who wanted to know when the proposed Act would be tabled.
On May 22, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reforms) M. Kulasegaran announced that the government was mulling enacting legislation to allow people to prepare for the management of their affairs using the power of attorney should they become mentally incapacitated.
