PUTRAJAYA: A committee has been set up to rationalise statutory bodies, aiming to reduce their numbers and ensure efficiency, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The Prime Minister stated that this exercise is necessary due to the large number of statutory bodies, with some having overlapping functions.
“These are among reforms in the civil service which have yet to take place. I want it to be done as soon as possible,” he said at the Finance Ministry’s monthly assembly on Tuesday (Sept 3).
Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, observed excess spending within certain statutory bodies.
He highlighted that when a new chairman is appointed, the office is often renovated despite being in good condition.
“Then there will be a car for the chairman. All these are costs.
“Some perceive the position given to them as a reward and flaunt the wealth which comes from the nation’s coffers. This must be stopped,” he said.
The Prime Minister said the committee would begin work immediately and he would instruct Cabinet ministers to give their full cooperation.
He emphasised that the people have placed their trust in the country’s leadership, including the civil service.
“All that is required from us is to carry out our duties responsibly, with dedication and honourably,” he said.
