Hazmat teams on hunt to detect source of chemical odour at three JB neighbourhoods

JOHOR BARU: An operation to detect the source of a chemical odour in three residential areas is still ongoing on Tuesday (Sept 3).

The Johor Fire and Rescue Department Operation Centre received a call about the foul smell at 1.30am Tuesday.

The Hazmat teams, comprising 19 personnel from the Larkin and Tebrau fire stations, were deployed to the areas where the smell was detected.

"A total of 19 men together with a Fire Rapid Tender (FRT) and an Emergency Medical Response Service (EMRS) are involved in the operation," a spokesman said in a statement.

The spokesman said they arrived at the area at 1.39am.

The chemical odour was detected in areas within Taman Mount Austin, Taman Daya and Taman Istimewa.

"We are using a gas detector to inspect the air in the surrounding areas to determine the types of chemical and risk levels to humans," said the statement.
