Indonesian ferry worker dies after falling into river in Sabah


KOTA KINABALU: A ferry worker who fell into the river while carrying items across a bridge at the Tomanggong Estate in Kinabatangan has been found dead, three days after his disappearance.

The 45-year-old Indonesian victim identified as Antonius Permisi was found by search and rescuers at around 10.30am, Tuesday (Sept 3), some 100m from where he was last seen.

According to the Sabah Fire and Rescue Department officials, the victim was carrying items from the ferry to the jetty and had fallen into the river during the process at around 9.55am on Sept 1.

Other workers tried to rescue the man but they could not find him anywhere, so they had to call the authorities for help.

Following a distress call, firemen from the Kinabatangan and Sandakan Fire Stations were deployed, while supporting agents such as the police, estate clinics and the public also helped.

For two days, search and rescuers conducted water surface searches and finally on Tuesday, discovered his body.

The body was handed over to the police for further action.
