Police investigate viral video of mobile phone theft in Johor

MUAR: A local male suspect stole a mobile phone after feinting interest in buying it from a nearby mobile phone shop.

Muar OCPD Asst Comm Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz said the suspect approached the sales girl and requested to see the mobile phone as he was planning to buy it.

“She gave the phone to him as requested, and suddenly the suspect made a dash with the phone,’’ he said in a statement.

ACP Raiz Mukhliz said the 27-year-old salesgirl was alone at the shop when the incident happened, and there were no other customers except the suspect.

He said police came across the 70-second video of the phone theft on social media.

“The salesgirl lodged a police report on the incident last Sunday (Sept 1) at 11.49am,’’ added ACP Raiz Mukhliz.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft, which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years upon conviction.
