TikTok video on Melaka Tengah police HQ under probe

MELAKA: Melaka police are investigating a TikTok video making false claims about the Melaka Tengah police headquarters' future site in Batu Berendam here.

Melaka police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Zainol Samah said the facts presented in the video claiming that the new building was unsafe for occupation were untrue as the temporary site was certified safe with a Certificate of Fitness for Occupancy (CoF) issued by the Melaka Historical Melaka City Council since 2003.

"Almost 96% of the renovation work on the building has been completed by the contractor appointed by the Public Works Department," he said on Tuesday(Sept 3).

DCP Zainol said that the eight-storey temporary building was put into use after the current building of the IPD at Bandar Hilir here, which was built during the British era in 1924 was found to be deteriorating and hazardous for occupation.

He noted that the ageing structure required overly high repair costs and the facelift was economically unfeasible.

"There were also complaints from my men and the local community about the deteriorating condition of the building," he said.

DCP Zainol said Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh agreed to relocate the IPD's operations to the temporary building after making several visits to evaluate the conditions.

"The proposal to construct a new complex remains in progress and is included in the 12th Malaysia Plan," he said.

DCP Zainol stressed that the relocation was intended to ensure the safety of his men and the comfort of the public visiting the IPD.

He added that an investigation paper has been opened under Section 500 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

On Tuesday(Sept 2), the video circulated on social media claiming that the new IPD was unsafe and lacked a CoF.
