Seremban among districts with highest fraud cases

SEREMBAN: Seremban is the sixth district in the country with the highest number of online fraud cases from January to August this year, says Negri Sembilan police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Ahmad Dzaffir Mohd Yusoff.

He said Seremban reported 701 cases, followed by Nilai with 434 incidents, ranking it the 15th in the country.

According to him, the state recorded 1,710 cases with losses of RM47.1mil within the same period compared to 2,024 cases with losses of RM40.9 million last year.

“Although the number of fraud cases showed a decrease of 18%, the losses recorded increased by more than RM6.2mil.

“One of the factors both places had a higher number of cases was probably because of the opening of new residential areas, with more people living here and travelling daily to work in the Klang Valley,” he told reporters at the Cybercrime Threat #Saynotoscam townhall organised by Negri Sembilan police at the Seremban City Council Hall here yesterday.

In his speech earlier, DCP Ahmad Dzaffir reminded the people to always be alert whenever they received calls or messages from unknown individuals.

He said they should be vigilant as scammers always use new methods to dupe their victims.

“I, for example, once received a message on my Telegram account from a ‘friend’ asking for help when that very same friend was at the same table having a meal with me,” he said, adding that the scammer had used his friend’s photograph in the scam attempt.

DCP Ahmad Dzaffir said that people should always use logic and think rationally when people unknown to them make unusually high investment offers or accuse them of being involved in crime.
