Butterworth man dies in house fire

BUTTERWORTH: A man was found dead in the bedroom of his house after a fire at Jalan Assumption here.

A Penang Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said the 55-year-old victim was found at 1.15am on Thursday (Sept 5).

"His death was confirmed by Health Ministry personnel at the scene," he said in a statement.

The victim's body was handed over to the police for further investigation, he added.

He said the initial investigation found that the fire broke out in the bedroom.

He said the team from the Butterworth fire station conducted an overhaul operation to search for and extinguish remaining pockets of fire after the initial blaze was brought under control.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, he added.
