Mahkota polls: Only one nomination form sold as of Sept 5, says EC

JOHOR BARU: Only one nomination form has been sold for the Mahkota by-election in Johor so far, says the Election Commission (EC).

Johor EC assistant director Noreain Bachok (pic) said nomination forms for the state seat were available from Aug 13.

“As of Thursday (Sept 5), only one individual has purchased the form from the Kluang Municipal Council (MPK), which is the designated returning officer’s office.

“We have not (received) enquiries from any parties at the moment.

“Those who wish to contest in the by-election can purchase the nomination form at MPK until 10am on Nomination Day, Sept 14, at the latest,” he said after a media briefing on the by-election at RTM here on Thursday.

The forms cost RM20 each and interested candidates may buy as many sets as they want.

He also said 1,126 EC personnel would be on duty throughout the by-election, with manpower coming from neighbouring states such as Melaka and Negri Sembilan.

Polling day is set for Sept 28, with nominations on Sept 14 and early voting scheduled for Sept 24.

The seat in Kluang fell vacant after its assemblyman Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain passed away at age 63 on Aug 2.

Sharifah Azizah, a former Johor Wanita Umno chief, won the seat with a 5,166-vote majority in the March 2022 state election against Amanah’s Taqiuddin Cheman, Bersatu’s Mohamad Nor Lingan and Warisan’s Mohamed Noor Suleiman.
