PETALING JAYA: Mat Kilau director Syamsul Yusof has officially divorced his wife, actress Ira Kazar, less than two years after the now ex-couple's controversial marriage.
This comes after Ira was confirmed to have committed five taklik (conditional divorce) violations during their marriage by the Kuala Selangor Syariah Lower Court.
Syarie Judge Mohd Faizal Habib confirmed the ruling after filing for a taklik divorce pronouncement and examining documents filed by Ira on Aug 21.
Ira’s lawyer Mohammad Fadhil Abdul Razak confirmed that the court had found the occurrence of the taklik pronouncement violation which resulted in the divorce with one talak.
Talak in Islamic law refers to the legal and religious process of divorce initiated by the husband that allows a man to end his marriage by pronouncing divorce, either verbally or in writing.
“Today (Thursday, Sept 5), the court has confirmed that there was an out-of-court divorce between Ira and Syamsul.
“The court approved the talak at around 10.30am today, and the case at the Gombak Timur Syariah Lower Court will not proceed,” he told Bahasa Malaysia portal mStar.
Syamsul's lawyer Azmi Rais confirmed that Ira had violated the taklik conditions five times since Aug 14.
“The violations occurred willingly, without any external coercion. The idah (a waiting period that a Muslim woman must observe after the end of her marriage) period also began on the same date (Aug 14),” he said.
Syamsul had previously filed for divorce at the Gombak Timur Syariah Lower Court on Aug 19, much to the surprise of many including his parents.
Syamsul and Ira married on Jan 6 last year in Thailand without informing his wife at the time, actress Puteri Sarah Liyana, who then filed for divorce and officially parted ways on June 14 the same year.
