Sabah Government to reassess 2027 SEA Games co-hosting proposal

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah has agreed to review and reconsider its role as a potential co-host for the 2027 SEA Games, says state Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ellron Angin.

A unanimous decision was reached during the weekly Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor on Wednesday (Sept 4).

"While the idea of Sabah co-hosting the 2027 SEA Games has been proposed, it still requires formal Cabinet approval.

"We have agreed to examine the proposal in greater detail," said Angin in a statement on Thursday (Sept 5).

Angin added that further discussions would take place between the Sabah Youth and Sports Ministry and the federal government to clarify the logistical and financial specifics of the potential collaboration.

"I will meet with the Federal Youth and Sports Minister, Hannah Yeoh, at the earliest opportunity to discuss and address the finer details," he added.

The findings from these discussions would be presented to the Sabah Cabinet for final deliberation and approval.

Despite the need for further review, Angin said the state government’s strong support for the federal government’s plan to host the games and pledged Sabah’s full cooperation in ensuring the success of the 2027 SEA Games.

Earlier, Sabah Finance Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun clarified that neither he nor the state government had been made aware of Sabah's alleged RM100mil financial commitment to co-host the international sporting event.

This comes after Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh announced that Malaysia had accepted the offer to host the 2027 SEA Games, with Penang, Sabah, Sarawak, and Kuala Lumpur sharing hosting responsibilities.

Yeoh mentioned that the total cost for the event is estimated at RM700 million, with Sarawak pledging RM300mil, Sabah allegedly offering RM100mil, and Penang contributing RM15mil.
