FLORISTS are concerned about the rising prices and poor quality of flowers in the run-up to the Vinayagar Sathurthi festival, reported Makkal Osai.

The festival, which is one of the most important ones for Hindus, sees a lot of flower sales, Kajang-based seller Vijayan Khozhanthaivelu said.

According to the report, chrysanthemums coming to markets in the last few days have had smaller and fewer blossoms on each stem.

Despite the increasing costs, they are still trying to give a fair price to their customers, florists Thavamalar Thomas and Thirunavukkarasu Karuppiah said.

> Self-proclaimed vigilantes in India shot dead a teenager they suspected of smuggling a cow, Makkal Osai reported.

The victim, identified as Aryan Mishra, 19, stopped his car after a 30km chase before the attackers shot him at point blank range.

The attackers, who then realised the SUV carried no cows, quickly fled the scene. Aryan died in hospital later.

The gang’s supposed leader and his friends were arrested.

Rising Hindu nationalism in the country has seen the propagation of the so-called cow vigilantism targeting beef-eating minorities.
