KOTA KINABALU: Human Resource Ministry (Kesuma) is conducting a study to assess the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the Malaysian job market.
Its Minister, Steven Sim Chee Keong (pic), said that a report on the study is expected to be completed by the end of September.
"We aim to understand what will happen to certain jobs in specific sectors over the next three to five years," he said at the Forum on Future Workforce in Sustainable Agriculture at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Sandakan campus on Friday (Sept 6).
He mentioned that the report would help the ministry develop training programs for workers in sectors likely impacted by the technology.
"We will also provide direction for acquiring new skills and jobs that may emerge due to AI’s development, as AI could create new roles.
"Through this initiative, we will ensure that Malaysian workers are equipped with the training necessary to secure employment in the era of AI, digitalisation, and the green economy," said Sim.
He added that RM2.6bil has been allocated for the study, skill development, and human capital enhancement.
Meanwhile, Sim also said that the passing of the long-awaited Sabah Labour Ordinance would finally bring the rights enjoyed by workers in Peninsular Malaysia to their counterparts in the state.
“This will ensure fair treatment for over two million workers across Sabah,” he said.
The ordinance has garnered widespread support, including from Sabah’s leadership.
“Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Hajiji Noor has fully endorsed this legislation, marking a monumental step forward for labour rights in the state,” Sim said.
